The Young Ethnographers
Schools Collection 2017
As part of ‘Invisible Stories’ pupils from the 5th and 6th classes in Allenwood School were invited to create a project that echoed the 1930s Schools Folklore Collection. During the first workshop topics were selected from the original guidelines and discussed in the classroom: piseogs, hidden treasure, weather lore, local happenings, old schools, toys and games, food today and in olden times, local places, bird lore, local cures using plants and weeds, old stories and mythology, ghost stories and Halloween. The children were then encouraged to collect more stories from parents and older members of the community.
The Schools Collection 17 is a collection of stories, local history and traditions that creates a dialogue with the archival material collected almost 90 years ago. It reflects both the pupils’ interests as well as that of the wider community and show how modernity has altered local consciousness over this period. The Schools Collection 17 will be accessible online at a later date.
